Smooth aster occurs on well-drained, sandy or loamy soils, often in open woodlands of oak or pine, as well as in prairies. It is an elegant blue aster and does well in gardens. Like many asters, it likes some ground space to re-seed. It only creeps a little. Try a few sunny locations and see where it thrives.
